After a twelve-week trial run staged by the Royal Shakespeare Company, Matilda premiered in Londons West End in November, 2011 at the Cambridge Theatre and on Broadway in April, 2013 at the Shubert Theatre. On November 22, Theatre Workshop of Nantucket brings this critically acclaimed, smash hit to Nantucket for the holiday season. Matilda the Musical is based on the classic novel by genius childrens author Roald Dahl. Adapted by Dennis Kelly, with music and lyrics by Tim Minchin, the story centers on Matilda (Roan LaScola), a precocious young girl who loves to read. Matilda discovers her own intellectual powers, as well as some special magical powers. With the help of her lovely teacher, Miss Honey (Libby Veilleux), she overcomes the obstacles presented by her parents, the outlandish and not very nice, Mr & Mrs Wormwood (James Benjamin Rodgers & Jodi Bluestein) and her beastly school principal, Miss Trunchbull (Gabe Belyeu). Matilda is directed by Sara Brians. Brians is an accomplished and award winning New York based director and choreographer. She brings her experience working on the Broadway production of Matilda to the Theatre Workshops production. Her other Broadway credits include, Billy Elliot, White Christmas, 42nd Street, After the Night and the Music and The Terms of My Surrender.Brians directs a cast of 24 actors from New York, LA and Nantucket, including the 9 young actors who play the school children, led and inspired by LaScolas Matilda. Theatre Workshop of Nantuckets Artistic Director, Justin Cerne says, I am so thrilled that Sara was available to direct this show. She has a vision that is true to the story and the Broadway version, but she is definitely bringing her own magic to this production. Cerne goes on to say, Not only is Sara giving our local actors and local child actors a chance to work with a talented Broadway director, she is putting something really special on stage for the island this holiday season. Were all very proud of this show. Matilda runs November 22 through December 14. Theatre Workshop is offering special pricing on the quieter weekends of November 22 and December 11th. Those weekends tickets are $55 for adults and $25 for kids. Tickets at theatrenantucket.org or 508-228-4305.
