Music for the Lenten Season by Georg Philipp Telemann
Presented on period instruments by the early music ensemble A Joyful Noyse
Sunday, March 5, 2023 at 2:00pm at Hancock Church, 1912 Mass Ave in Lexington, MA
Arguably the most prolific composer in history, with over three thousand catalogued compositions, Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767) had a profound influence on the musical life and style of the 18th century. The concert Songs of Sacred Contemplation will present music that Telemann composed for, or is appropriate to, the Lenten Season. From some of his earliest works to his later solo
cantatas and selections from two of his Passion Oratorios that will be on the program, Telemann's music demonstrates how he was able to incorporate the rich and expressive palette of secular music, theatrical style and poetic devices into the realm of sacred music, giving its listeners a deeper and more meaningful spiritual
experience.
