Anyone who remembers the terror and thrill of first love will relate to "Girlfriend," a rock musical by Todd Almond with music and lyrics by Matthew Sweet, opening at Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater May 12.
Nebraska, the 1990s. Two teenage boys - one a social outcast, the other a quintessential jock - explore a relationship during a summer of self-discovery between high school graduation and the rest of their lives. Set to the irresistible songs from Matthew Sweet's landmark pop album of the same name, this rock musical gives voice to those of us who grew up in small towns, and those of us who didn't quite fit in and learned we were somehow different.
"Girlfriend," starring Jon Kovach and Christopher Timson, is directed by Christopher Ostrom, with musical direction by Nathan Leigh.
Todd Almond is a writer, musician, and performer whose plays include Kansas City Choir Boy performed by rock icon Courtney Love and Mr. Almond.
Special dates to note are Pay WHAT You Can Night on May 13, an opening night reception on May 14, and two Playmaker Talkbacks May 19 & 26.
Individual tickets to "Girlfriend" and season subscriptions are now on sale, including a new Theater Under 30 subscription for young theater patrons: 5 plays for $50.
