Prince/Bowie DanceHall with DJ Christopher Anderson

This Yard dance party promises to release the "Purple Spiders from Mars" in all of us under the DJ baton of our DJ Christopher Anderson. Come boogie, remember and celebrate these icons of heaven-sent dance music. Maybe George Michael will make a guest appearance in halo and sequins! These DanceHall informal events celebrate the joy of dance for everyone. We play the music loudly, and you bring your dancing shoes. DanceHall events were instituted by Artistic Director and Executive Producer David R. White in 2011 and have been a mainstay of season scheduling since. Past artists have included island rocker Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish, NYC's DJ Rekha, father and daughter duo Arlen and Lexie Roth, guitarist Garrett James, and many others.

Mytoi Garden: DanceTheYard and Friends

The Trustees of Reservations and The Yard collaborate for the 5th year to feature The Yard's island-grown company, DanceTheYard, improvising amongst the trees and ponds at Mytoi Japanese Garden on Chappaquiddick. Dancers will perform for guests walking through the beautiful garden, and will be joined by the Island improvisational group What's Written Within in pop up performances. The event is free and open to the public. For additional information, call 508.645.9662.

"As visitors wandered through the garden, enjoying the cool breeze and warm sunshine, dancers moved gracefully on and around Mytoi's natural features. There was no music - that was the point. According to Jesse Keller, the Yard's co-producer, the dancers drew inspiration from the garden's environment." - MV Times, 2016

About DanceTheYard

DanceTheYard (DTY) is The Yard's resident dance collective. Co-directors and choreographers Alison Manning, The Yard's Executive Director, and Jesse Keller, The Yard's Director of Island Programs & Education (with Artistic Advisor David R. White), have been building a body of work and presenting an annual weekend of performances each summer, as part of the Yard Arts season. DTY is comprised of professionals living on Martha's Vineyard and in New York City, and each member has become a part of The Yard's greater service mission: working together to present performances for the public, participating in educational residencies and dance making programs for children and adults, along with other community based events around Martha's Vineyard. Each component of DTY's work contributes to The Yard's overarching mission of support for emerging choreographers through residency and financial support, dance and related arts presentations, and a commitment to arts education in the local and national communities. DTY's directors have created an emerging body of work and a collective of professional artists who are committed to seeing the work presented in the local and national dance arena.

SEED. GROW. REAP. REPEAT: THE NATURE OF THE ARTIST.

Mission: The Yard supports diverse, contemporary dance-makers and related artists in their creative processes through paid, creative residency, public performance, long-term education, and artist-driven civic engagement. We serve all ages and cultural populations on Martha's Vineyard, and work collaboratively with artists, producers, and other cultural organizers within regional, national, and international contexts.
