The Company Theatre To Hold Open Auditions For RAGTIME

The award-winning Company Theatre announces non-equity open call auditions for the musical classic Ragtime on Sunday, May 20, 1 pm, the company Theatre Center for Performing Arts, 30 Accord Park Drive, Norwell. Callbacks will be held on Monday, May 21, 7 pm. Ragtime book is by Terrence McNally, lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, and music by Stephen Flaherty. The show is directed by Zoe Bradford and Jordie Saucerman, with music direction by Steve Bass and choreography by Sally Forrest. All roles are open for casting. At the dawn of a new era, everything is changing and anything is possible in Ragtime, the epic, historical, Tony Award winning musical. Three distinctly different stories are woven together creating an unforgettable experience in turn of the 20th century America. A wealthy white family, a determined Jewish immigrant father and his young daughter, and a daring Harlem musician all share surprising interconnections of the human heart as they strive for their piece of the American dream. Unbridled optimism prevails in this grand ensemble musical that celebrates the spirit of freedom with a remarkable relevance in today's social climate.

Character Descriptions and Vocal Ranges

Booker T. Washington - Male, 45+ (D3 to Eb4) Incredibly intelligent social activist. He is an eloquent and articulate gentleman with no patience for Black Americans leading less than exemplary lives.

Coalhouse Walker Jr. - Male, 25+ (G2 to A4) A proud and talented pianist. He is sophisticated, with a romantic demeanor and gentle heart. African-American.

Emma Goldman - Female, 35+ (B3 to D5) Social activist. With an unapologetically demanding presence, she is a leader and powerful woman. Russian-American.

Evelyn Nesbit - Female, 18+ (B3 to D5) Beautiful vaudeville performer. Thrust into the limelight after the high profile murder of her lover, the entire world is her stage.

Father - Male, 30+ (A2 to F4) Mother's professionally successful husband. Fancying himself an amateur explorer, he is commanding and attractive. Enjoys being the family breadwinner.

Grandfather - Male. Mother's very conservative father. He is a retired professor and easily irritated by nearly everything.

Henry Ford - Male (D4 to F5) An American industrialist and founder of the Ford Motor Company

Harry Houdini - Male (E3 to G4) The famous magician. With dark features and notable physical ability, he stands as a symbol of the 'American Dream.' Hungarian-American.

J.P. Morgan - Male, 50+. The rich, famous financier.

Little Boy - Male, 8+ (E4 to D5) Mother and Father's son. He is open-hearted and curious with inexplicable clairvoyance. Never passes judgment on others.

Little Girl - Female, 7+ (C4 to Bb4) Tateh's daughter. A confused and vulnerable child in a brand-new home, she is guarded and shy. Loves her father very much. Latvian-American.

Mother - Female, 30+ (G3 to F#5) The consummate wife and mother. A kind woman with incredible moral fiber. Refined, intelligent, and graceful. She is accepting of others.

Sarah - Female, 20+ (G#3 to F#5) Washwoman. Sarah is beautiful and filled with a strong will to live fueled by an innocent spirit. Falls deeply in love with Coalhouse after much resistance. African-American.

Sarah's Friend - Female (D3 to D5) A friend of Sarah's who attends her funeral.

Tateh - Male, 35+ (Bb2 to F#4) The haggard artist and father. He wears the trials and tribulations of his past on his sleeve but remains optimistic. Full of genuine drive and heart. Latvian-American.

Willie Conklin - Male, (D4 to F5) A racist volunteer fireman who destroys Coalhouse's car.

Younger Brother - Male, 18+, (B2 to F#4) Mother's younger brother. With his wiry frame and obsessive personality, he is an erratic soul. Influenced greatly by Goldman's teachings.

Ensemble Roles - Baseball Fans; Coalhouse Supporters; Firemen; Harlem Citizens, Immigrants To America; New Rochelle Citizens; Reporters; Vacationers

Audition candidates should be strong singers, arrive prepared to sing a song from the show in the show key, or a song in a similar musical theater style. Candidates are encouraged to dress appropriately for movement. Actors are advised to bring a headshot or snapshot, a resume is helpful, but not required. The score will be available, and an audition accompanist will be provided. Details on the production rehearsal schedule will be available during auditions.

Performances of Ragtime are held from July 27 through August 19, from Thursday through Sunday, evening and matinee performances are available. Tickets are available for $41 to $43. Family and Friends Fridays offers the limited quantity purchase of four or more tickets for Friday performances at $38 per ticket by calling or visiting the box office in person only.
