The Circuit Theatre Company, a local, IRNE-nominated company run and operated by theatre artists ages 18-25 from across the country will kick off its 2013 summer season with the Boston premiere of The Amish Project by Jessica Dickey. The Amish Project will be entirely produced, directed, designed, and acted by young theatre professionals.
Alexandra Keegan, director of this summer's production, notes that The Amish Project shows us how to find hope in the face of tragedy. "Bringing this text to life has served as a reminder that with each moment of violence often comes an act of compassion...this play is in part about the "whys?" certainly - but it is predominantly a celebration of life, community, memory, and healing."
In 2006 in Nickle Mines, Pennsylvania, a man entered an Amish schoolhouse, shot five girls and then himself. Shocking the nation to its core, what was even more surprising was the path of forgiveness and compassion forged by the Amish in the wake of violence.
In 2008, The Amish Project made its original debut at the New York International Fringe Festival and instantly generated buzz in the theatre community. It went on to a workshop production at the Cherry Lane Theatre in New York City, and on June 10th, 2009, officially opened Off@Broadway at Rattlestick Playwrights Theater to rave reviews - "extraordinary... remarkable...compelling" (The New York Times).
Five actresses, representing the five young women killed, will tell the story of this event, playing over 20 characters in a relevant and heartfelt Boston premiere.
The Amish Project will play June 21, 23, 25, 26 & 27 at 8pm, and June 22 at 7pm & 9pm at the Cambridge YMCA. Press opening will be June 22 at 7pm.
