In Dürrenmatt's tragic comedy, billionaire Claire Zachanassian returns to the destitute home town she left in disgrace 45 years ago, bent on exacting retribution on the true love who betrayed her. At first the indignant citizens reject her offer of cash for a corpse. They talk importantly of their town's cultural and humane traditions. But when they start buying new shoes, cognac, cars- and all on credit- there is only one way to meet the bills.
Ann Carpenter, most recently seen in Apollinaire's Everyman as God, stars as Claire Zachanassian. Ann has appeared in numerous plays over the years with Apollinaire, including
A Beautiful Day in November on the Banks of the Greatest of the Great Lakes, Blood Wedding, Uncle Vanya, House of Bernarda Alba, Top Girls, The Real Inspector Hound, her entry into our Actor's Revenge festival- Grapes of Wrath, and our Edinborough Fringe Festival entry, Anger Box. Ann has performed with numerous Boston area companies, including with Actors Shakespeare Project in God's Ear, and performed in Dublin for Bloomsday at the James Joyce Festival.
The works of the Swiss playwright Friedrich Dürrenmatt (1921-1990) combine surface realism with an absurd and almost surreal artistic vision. His plays include Romulus der Grosse (adapted by Gore Vidal as Romulus), and The Physicists. He was nominated for Broadway's 1959 Tony Award as author of Best Play nominee The Visit.
This summer we are inviting the adventurous to join us on stage. Ensemble members will play non-speaking roles. Rehearsal is at 6:00 and ensemble members take the stage the same night at 7:30! Adults can sign up at www.apollinairetheatre.com. Young ensemble roles will be played by Apollinaire Play Lab students: aplaylab.com
As in past summers, The Visit will be staged environmentally in multiple locations. The audience will move with the action as our "most popular citizen" and his family take their first and final drive, returning back to a transformed Golden Apostle for the climactic community meeting.
Audience members are encouraged to bring blankets and beach chairs, and a picnic to enjoy along with the harbor views.
