Moonbox Productions, nominated for numerous IRNE and Elliot Norton Awards, is thrilled to announce its theatrical line up for the 2017-2018 season.
In November, Moonbox kicks-off its season with the hilarious comic thriller, The 39 Steps, by Patrick Barlow and John Buchan. Then in April it's time to "put down the knitting, the book and the broom" as Moonbox presents the Tony Award winning musical, Cabaret, by Joe Masteroff, John Kander, Fred Ebb, John Van Druten, and Christopher Isherwood.
Alfred Hitchcock and Monty Python collide in the hilarious, madcap spy-melodrama-turned-comedy, The 39 Steps. Produced by Sharman Altshuler and directed by IRNE and Norton nominated Director, Allison Olivia Choat, The 39 Steps opens on November 17th and runs through December 9th at the Boston Center for the Arts Plaza Theater.
Richard Hannay is just an ordinary man living a quiet life... until he meets Anabella Schmidt, a beautiful woman with a mysterious past. When Annabella is murdered in his apartment, Richard becomes the target of both a nationwide manhunt and a nefarious ring of spies. Meet a cast of more than 150 characters (played by just four actors), witness a series of death-defying leaps (all from short distances), and behold a myriad of dazzling special effects (on a limited budget) in this unforgettable tale that makes both adventure and romance more absurdly enjoyable than ever before.
Moonbox Productions' season continues in the spring, April 14th to April 29th, at the Boston Center for the Arts Wimberly Theatre with the Tony Award winning musical, Cabaret, by Joe Masteroff, John Kander, Fred Ebb, John Van Druten, and Christopher Isherwood. Produced by Sharman Altshuler, directed and choreographed by Rachel Bertone with music direction by Dan Rodriguez, Cabaret takes audiences deep into the seedy nightlife of the Kit Kat Klub on the eve of Hitler's rise to power in Weimar, Germany. Cliff Bradshaw, a young American writer newly arrived in Berlin, is immediately taken by the beguiling, self-destructive cabaret singer Sally Bowles. Meanwhile, Fräulein Schneider, proprietor of Cliff and Sally's boardinghouse, tentatively begins a romance with Herr Schultz, a mild-mannered fruit seller who happens to be Jewish. With the Emcee's bawdy songs as wry commentary, Cabaret explores the dark, heady, and tumultuous life of Berlin's natives and expatriates as Germany slowly yields to the emerging Third Reich. Musical numbers include well-known classics of the musical stage like "Money," "Tomorrow Belongs To Me," "Willkommen," "Maybe This Time," and of course "Cabaret."
Throughout the 2017-2018 season Moonbox will continue its support of local non-profits by partnering with a different non-profit organization for each show, giving them greater visibility and helping them to increase the reach and impact of their work.
"We are all so excited to get to work on our upcoming season!" says Moonbox Producer Sharman Altshuler. "The 39 Steps is going to be a blast - working on this kind of show that pushes the absolute limits of creative stage craft is a thrilling new challenge for our team, and is a perfect prelude to some exciting projects we have in store for the 2018/2019 season! Our spring show Cabaret has been on our short list for some time and it will be a thrill to make this show our very first on the BCA's main stage, the Wimberly! Our new Internship and Moonbox Apprentice Programs that we kicked off last spring will be in full swing this coming year, giving us an opportunity to share the world of applied arts and sciences with Boston area youth. And we are also looking forward to the launch of Moonbox U. - our continuing education program for Boston theater artists - it's going to be a fun and busy year!"
