Savion Glover has been tapped to perform at the 2006 JVC Newport Jazz Festival.  Glover is one of the youngest men to be nominated for a Tony Award. This honor was for his performance in Black and Blue. He made his Broadway debut as the title character in The Tap Dance Kid at the age of 12 and appeared opposite Gregory Hines in Jelly's Last Jam and then toured with that show.

Glover choreographed and starred in Bring in 'Da Noise, Bring in 'Da Funk, which swept the Tony and Drama Desk awards in 1996.

This year's festival runs on the weekend of August 11, 12, and 13 and once again, the festival will begin at the International Tennis Hall of Fame on Friday evening and then continue on Saturday and Sunday from 11:30 am to 7:30 pm each day at beautiful Fort Adams State Park.

On Friday, August 11, singer/guitarist John Pizzarelli will make his Newport debut and open the festival at the Newport Casino with his 16 piece big band in a show entitled, "Dear Mr. Sinatra," a salute to the legendary "Old Blue Eyes." Jazz singer Jane Monheit and her quartet will launch the evening's festivities.

The jazz festival moves over to Fort Adams State Park on Saturday morning, August 12 where headliners such as singer/guitarist George Benson, jazz vocalist Al Jarreau and Cuban trumpet titan Arturo Sandoval join 27-year-old pianist Robert Glasper in separate appearances on the big JVC Jazz Stage.

The New Orleans' Preservation Hall Jazz Band will be on the Pavilion Stage, which is celebrating its 45th Anniversary Year.

Sunday's festival program will include pianist extraordinaire Dave Brubeck, African songstress Angelique Kidjo, trumpet stylist Chris Botti, Savion Glover, and the post-modern jazz/rock group The Bad Plus, all performing on the JVC Jazz Stage.

Tickets went on sale on Wednesday, May 10 at 10:00 a.m. through Ticketweb via the internet and by phone at 866-468-7619 and at the Newport Festival office located at 770 Aquidneck Avenue in Middletown, Rhode Island. Call 401-847-3700 for more information and office hours.
