Berklee's Musical Theater Club presents Sweeney Todd, the Tony Award-winning musical thriller written by Stephen Sondheim. The production, set in a 19th century insane asylum, features a 30-piece orchestra and full cast ensemble of some of Berklee's best musical theater performers. The musical director is student Asher Denburg, and the director is student Justin Gates.
Sweeney Todd has become a worldwide success since being awarded eight Tonys, including Best Musical, during its original Broadway run.
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is a 1979 musical thriller with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Hugh Wheeler, based on the 1973 play by Christopher Bond. Set in 19th century England, the musical details the return of barber Sweeney Todd to London after 15 years of exile, in order to take revenge on the corrupt judge who banished him, by conspiring with a local baker, Mrs. Lovett, who is in desperate need of fresh meat for her pies.
Sweeney Todd takes place at the Berklee Performance Center (BPC) on Wednesday, February 24 and Thursday, February 25 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $8 in advance, $12 day of show. Berklee's Musical Theater Club is a student-run club dedicated to bringing the best of musical theater to Berklee. The club provides opportunities for those interested in musical theater to obtain knowledge and experience through the mediums of musicals, revues, fundraisers, PR, crew, etc. Leadership opportunities allow students to gain hands-on experience leading peers and learning the administrative and creative aspects of musical theatre while having a fun time in the process.
