In honor of Valentines Day, the Larcom Theatre in Beverly will present "First Night" a romantic comedy for all ages Thursday, February 14 thru Sunday, February 17.
"Written by Lowell native Jack Neary, 'First Night' is the story of a couple that rekindles a relationship after more than two decades apart," said Lisa Crowell, who owns the Larcom theatre with her husband Donnie. "It is a funny, bright, and warm comedy set in a 1980's video store on New Year's Eve."
"New Year's Eve is traditionally a romantic time," said Neary, who is also directing the play, "but as the play has been produced around the world I have come to see 'First Night' as a metaphor for a new beginning for the two characters. Romance happens throughout the year and life. It works well as a Valentines Day story."
"First Night" was first of Neary's plays. He has since written dozens including "Trick or Treat' that just open this January to great reviews at the 59E59 Theater in New York City.
As a couple with a young family, the Crowells have great admiration for long-term couples.
"In the spirit of Valentines Day, we are inviting couples that have been committed for a half century or more to attend the Sunday matinee for the cost of one ticket. "We are offering the deal simply as a recognition that true love still exists in 2019, while offering these couples time together without breaking the bank," explained Donnie Crowell.
"Having been married for just five years, raising our two young boys, and starting a few businesses together, it is mind-boggling to think what the next 45 years will bring!" said Donnie.
"First Night" will be on stage for four performances, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, February 14 to 16 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, February 17, at 3 p.m. Located at 13 Wallis Street in downtown Beverly, the Larcom Theatre is a 560-seat restored 1912 Vaudeville theatre known for its amazing acoustics making it the perfect environment to see an intimate love story. "First Night" is produced in association with Acting Out and Punctuate4 Productions.
"Couples that have been together 50 years or more are invited to call the box office at 978-922-6313 for the special Sunday matinee tickets," said Lisa.
Ticket prices range from $19 to $23 in advance and $27 at the door. There is also a sweetheart package deal for $60 that includes two premium seats and two drink tickets. Details and tickets are available online at TheLarcom.org.
