Rep Stage, the professional Equity theatre in residence at Howard Community College (HCC) has been honored with two nominations for the 2009 Helen Hayes Awards: "Outstanding Lighting Design," Daniel Covey; and "The Canadian Embassy Award for Outstanding Ensemble, Resident Play." Both nominations are for Rep Stage's June 2009 production of Naomi Wallace's "In the Heart of America." Rep Stage has been nominated for 39 awards and won seven during its 16-year existence.

During the April 13, 2009 awards ceremony, Rep Stage's Producing Artistic Director Michael Stebbins and fellow D.C. area artistic directors will also be honored during a special tribute. Past Helen Hayes Tribute honorees include James Earl Jones, Helen Hayes, Mary Martin, Angela Lansbury and Stephen Sondheim. The 25th Anniversary Helen Hayes Awards ceremony will be held at the Warner Theatre in Washington D.C. For more information on Rep Stage, visit www.repstage.org. "It is always an honor to be recognized by the Helen Hayes Awards judges, especially when you consider that there are 3500 professional theatre artists and over 65 theatre companies in the region that meet eligibility requirements," said Michael Stebbins. "That the Helen Hayes Awards are giving this year's Helen Hayes Tribute to the artistic directors of the individual theatres is not only a gracious gesture but also recognition of those of us who share with each other the immense pride we all take in our extraordinary theatre community."

About The Helen Hayes Awards

The Helen Hayes Awards is among the area's chief community builders, helping to strengthen the D.C. region by building one of its most powerful assets: the professional theatre. While the organization takes center stage on one night each year to celebrate Washington area theatre, its work behind the scenes to build audiences, honor excellence, and educate youth continues for 365 nights - and days.
