"It is such a joy for us to share this play with audiences around the world. The show won a Peace Foundation Award in Adelaide, which recognizes artists who promote human rights and social justice through their work. That is so meaningful to all of us. This is a U.S./Mexico collaboration on a play from Italy - a truly international affair - and it's so beautiful to see it resonate with people in many countries. We're absolutely delighted that Barrington Stage has chosen to present the show this summer."
Inspired by Ettore Scola's Oscar-nominated story from stage and screen, Working on A Special Day explores the life-changing encounter between an overworked housewife and a mysterious bachelor on May 8, 1938-the day Rome celebrates Hitler's visit to Mussolini's Italy. A bittersweet drama unfolds within the charged political landscape of rising fascism in Rome. Performed in English by Mexican actors Ana Graham and Antonio Vega in a singular performance style, the actors employ simple props to create an intimate human story that unfolds while a charged political landscape of rising fascism stirs outside their apartment windows.
Working On A Special Day was first produced in the United States by The Play Company and Por Piedad Teatro at 59E59 Theaters in New York City. A prior workshop production was produced by The Play Company and Por Piedad Teatro at The Flea Theater in New York City. Adapted by Gigliola Fantoni. Translated by Danya Taymor, Ana Graham and Antonio Vega. Directed by and Starring Ana Graham and Antonio Vega.
