The Boston University College of Fine Arts returns to New York for its third annual InCite Arts Festival, themed "What's Past Is Prologue." The festival features performances, exhibits, film screenings and events running March 4 - 10 at venues throughout Manhattan.
For information, visit http://www.bu.edu/cfa/incite or call 617-353-3350.
The festival, which has been highlighted by The NY Times, The Washington Post and The New Yorker over the past two years, features the new play diventare; the one-act opera Antigone, a contemporary adaptation of Sophocles' play into an opera; a performance of Monteverdi's Vespers of 1610 by the Grammy-nominated Boston Baroque period orchestra and chorus; Reunited, an exhibition of the work of professional SVA painting and sculpting alumni; and a showcase and exhibit of graduating performance and design majors from the BU School of Theatre. Jim Petosa, Artistic Director of the InCite Arts Festival and Director of the BU School of Theatre, explains, "For this year's festival, we're embracing the idea of the past as prologue. All the artistic events conspire to create a unique multidisciplinary InCite Arts Festival that explores how refractions and reflections of the images of the past are indeed a prologue to the future."
In 2010, for the first time, InCite branches out beyond the College of Fine Arts to feature two "satellite events" from the larger Boston University community. The first, "I Remember Better When I Paint," is the screening of a documentary film about the positive impact of art and creative therapies on people with Alzheimer's, and is presented by the BU School of Medicine Alzheimer Disease Center. The second, "The Redstones NYC," is the screening of an annual festival of short films by graduate and undergraduate film and television students, presented by the BU College of Communication and sponsored by Sumner Redstone, chairman of VIACOM.
The InCite Arts Festival, originally conceived to share the dynamic artistic strengths and synergy of Boston University's College of Fine Arts schools of Music, Theatre, and Visual Arts, offers programming that boasts an eclectic and compelling combination of titles and artists. The addition of events from the College of Communication and School of Medicine to this year's festival evolves the InCite concept toward its long-term vision of embracing arts-related initiatives from throughout Boston University, with the College of Fine Arts leading the way. In Fall 2009, the moveable feast of InCite made a high-impact debut in Washington D.C., and now returns to New York for a third engagement. This round, the festival invites audiences on an exploration of diverse artistic terrain, some uncharted, some time-honored, all presented by a multigenerational community of passionate, accomplished artists. By highlighting BU's ‘new conservatory' model, InCite demonstrates the leadership role that universities can play as arts laboratories and creative collaborators reenergizing their professions.
Schedule of Events
diventare
Written by Jenny Rachel Weiner (CFA'09) and directed by Ellie Heyman (CFA'11)
When Linda's life fractures after a devastating loss, she escapes to an imaginary underwater kingdom. As a hurricane once again approaches, Linda must choose to retreat further or find a reason to live in the face of these losses and face the storm. Italian for "to become," diventare was developed as part of the New Play Initiative in the BU School of Theatre, one of three schools within CFA. This unconventional work is the CFA's official entry in the prestigious Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival. Due to explicit content, this play is recommended for mature audiences only.

Antigone
By Marjorie Merryman, composer and librettist
Marjorie Merryman's opera based on Sophocles' tragic play was composed in 1986. The opera follows Antigone as she faces the deaths of her two brothers, who have killed each other in battle. One is to be dishonored by Creon, the ruler of Thebes, who has deemed him a traitor and unworthy of burial. Antigone must fight Creon's word to ensure a respectable burial for her disgraced brother. The production features conductor William Lumpkin, stage director Jim Petosa, and six singers and ten instrumentalists from the BU School of Music, one of three schools within the College.
