While working on a novel about the occult, Charles Condomine decides to get a feel for the 'real thing' by inviting Madame Arcati, an eccentric medium, to hold a séance at his house. Her 'other-wordly' efforts inadvertently summon the ghost of his first wife, Elvira, who has been dead for seven years. Mayhem and hilarity are inevitable when Elvira and Charles' new wife Ruth don't exactly co-exist.
