Newton's New Philharmonia Orchestra Presents Family Friendly 'Celebrations!' December 16th At First Baptist Church

Embrace a vision of Sugar Plum Fairies and join Newton's New Philharmonia Orchestra for its annual holiday program of fun and family-friendly music. On Sunday, December 16, 2018 at 3 p.m., the New Philharmonia Orchestra will present Celebrations!, the first family concert of the 2018-2019 season along with guest performers from the Boston Ballet School, Newton Campus and Newton's All-City Treble Singers. The performance will take place at the accessible historic First Baptist Church in Newton Centre.

Associate Conductor Jorge Soto will lead the orchestra in this festive performance.

Born in Venezuela, Soto is a founding member of the Simón Bolívar National Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela. He has performed with the Youth Orchestra of the Americas and the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas and has guest conducted the Arkansas Youth Symphony and collaborated with the orchestras at Assumption College and Clark University.

Under the direction of principal Tamara King, students from the Boston Ballet School Newton Campus will join the New Philharmonia Orchestra, dancing to excerpts of Tchaikovsky's classic "The Nutcracker" which will also include an audience interactive element. Attendees will then experience a familiar joy of the season as Newton All City Treble Singers and the New Philharmonia will perform some of the most memorable holiday songs including "Dashing Through the Snow", "When You Believe" and legendary Boston composer Randall Thompson's "Velvet Shoes" which perfectly complements Elinor Wylie's original poem. The show will end with a truly breathtaking collaborative performance of dance, song and orchestra as all three organizations send a message of love and togetherness with "Let There Be Peace on Earth".

"Nothing sets the stage for a holiday celebration better than music, dance and song," said Adrienne Hartzell, executive director of the New Philharmonia Orchestra. "We are thrilled to be performing with the Boston Ballet School and the All City Treble Singers and spreading a bit of holiday cheer across the city of Newton.
