Hansol Jung's Cardboard Piano puts a human face on the beautiful, abiding portrait of love among a young female couple and the needless trauma, carnage, and spiritual crisis triggered by their encounter with violent, bigoted, reactive homophobia, says director Benny Sato Ambush. This play thrusts you in the middle of the inner and outer work required in the battle for reverence for all expressions of life and promises to tweak your conscience.
"Cardboard Piano is a beautifully written new drama which we eagerly anticipate bringing to the MainStage, shares New Rep Artistic Director Jim Petosa. This piece brings awareness to the very real consequences of same-sex relationships in Uganda, showing both tragic events and the self-reflection needed to overcome hatred many years later.
New Rep is proud to present the New England Premiere of Cardboard Piano, by the in-demand playwright Hansol Jung, says New Rep Managing Director, Harriet Sheets. New Rep audiences will be glad to welcome back New Rep veterans Michael Ofori (most recently seen in Statements After an Arrest Under the Immorality Act) and Marc Pierre (formerly of New Rep's Classic Repertory Company), as well as welcoming newcomers Rachel Cognata and Marge Dunn to the New Rep stage.
About Cardboard Piano Set in Northern Uganda at the turn of the millennium, Cardboard Piano reveals a love story set amidst an escalating civil war. A secret and improvised wedding between a local teenage girl and the daughter of American missionaries solidifies the commitment of these contemporary, star-crossed lovers, but leads to explosive consequences. This riveting new drama explores the roots of hate and the discovery of the potent power of forgiveness.
