New Repertory Theatre announces its 2009-2010 season, the inaugural season for new Artistic Director Kate Warner. The new season will present five plays on its Mainstage in the Charles Mosesian Theater; two plays in its Downstage @ New Rep series in the Black Box Theater; and two holiday offerings.
"I am thrilled to announce New Repertory Theatre's 26th season," says Ms. Warner. "In this challenging world, I am drawn to plays where the characters face a search for purpose -- a theme that resonates with everyone as we cope with these trying times. I believe that stories about rediscovering purpose will be more relevant than ever before."
Ms. Warner adds, "In New Rep's next season on the Mainstage, our audience will, meet a WWII Naval Officer, Mister Roberts, who wants to make a difference in a war that will change the nation; debate artistic verses commercial success in Speed-the-Plow; explore what ‘happily ever after' means in the comedy Indulgences; meet five musicians whose artistic drive overrides their personal relationships in Opus; and in Hot Mikado find duty and purpose with a twist of swing."
"Downstage @ New Rep in our Black Box Theater, we will be producing one of my all time favorites, 2.5 Minute Ride, and the cutting-edge comedy boom," said Ms. Warner. This intimate 90-seat theater offers theatergoers the chance to see plays that are up close and on the edge."
In 2009-2010, New Rep will continue its holiday traditions with Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, co-produced with Arsenal Arts and Watertown Children's Theatre, on the Mainstage in the Charles Mosesian Theater, and The Santaland Diaries in the Black Box Theater.
New Repertory Theatre, in residence at the Arsenal Center for the Arts, is the third largest theatre in the Greater Boston area. It presents world premieres, contemporary, and classic works in intimate settings. For additional information, visit: www.newrep.org.

Bravery, honor, grace...and rowdy rebellion.
In this 1948 Tony Award-winning classic, a restless crew aboard a cargo vessel idling in the South Pacific is desperately craving some onshore action. When the comedic ensemble clashes with their tyrannical captain, it is Mister Roberts who must bail them out. October 18, 2009 through November 08, 2009
It's a money-hungry business.
Speed-the-Plow exposes the greedy and opportunistic world of doing business. When an ambitious woman comes between two long-time friends, she threatens to derail the greenlighting of their surefire screenplay. In the business of making movies, we quickly learn that money talks, sex sells, and doing the right thing can be professional suicide. Coming off of a much-discussed, successful Broadway run, this 85-minute, hard-hitting play, by one of America's most revered writers, will have you questioning who your friends are and where your alliances lie.

In this New England Premiere by Canadian playwright Chris Craddock, we discover the solution to life's puzzles just might exist in this fractured fairy tale.
Opus

What sacrifices are made for greatness?
The celebrated and world-renowned Lazara String Quartet is struggling to prepare for their highest-profile performance when their gifted but volatile violist mysteriously disappears. The play is interwoven with rich and powerful music that propels this New England Premiere forward. Violinist-turned-playwright Michael Hollinger's Opus has tempers flaring and egos clashing when a new member is introduced and the group's secrets are revealed.
Love and life in full swing.
In the mythical village Titi-Pu, where flirting is illegal, a young rocker on the run from his over-eager fiancée is searching for the woman who stole his heart. Unfortunately, she has already been promised to her much older guardian. A series of seemingly fool-proof plans are hatched, only to be foiled by the merciless Mikado. This snappy adaptation of a classic musical by Gilbert and Sullivan has tunes and styles ranging from jazz and swing to gospel and blues. In this zany world full of colorful characters, flash, and fun, there is no telling what a wink will get you and who will ultimately steal your heart.

From her devout Jewish brother desperate to find his "shana maidel," to her 75 year-old father returning to Auschwitz, where his own parents were killed, Kron asks the question of how we can find humor in the midst of life's cruel twists of fate.
