New Repertory Theatre, in residence at the Arsenal Center for the Arts, has announced a change to their spring Mainstage Show.  New Rep will end the 25th season with Steven Martin’s contemporary comedy, Picasso at the Lapin Agile.

New Repertory Theatre’s decision to implement this change is two-fold:  The artistic transformation New Rep is undergoing in 2009 hinders executing its original plans to produce Three Sisters; and New Rep ardently believes it should close its 25th Season with a modern, stirring, and stimulating production that focuses on the possibilities the future brings.

“I am thrilled that New Rep decided to revise its 2008-2009 Season.” says Rick Lombardo, Producing Artistic Director.  “While Steve Martin might not always be considered one of the greatest writers of his generation, which is the theme for our season, he is one of the greatest icons of his generation and is highly regarded for his acting, comedy, and intellectual appreciation of the arts. Additionally, Picasso at the Lapin Agile celebrates the greatest artists and thinkers of their generation.  With the challenging political and economic environment we are facing, it is timely for us to focus on progressive thinkers and innovators.”

“What better way to celebrate New Rep’s 25th Season than with a comedy of ideas and forward thinking," asks Michael McCay, Chairman of the Board of Directors of New Repertory Theatre. This is the very same direction that New Rep is positioned and moving in as we close this chapter and embark upon a new on.”

Picasso at the Lapin Agile will be directed by Daniel Gidron.  The production will have the same performance schedule as Three Sisters, and the press opening will remain on Wednesday, April 22, 2009 at 7:30 p.m.

New Repertory Theatre presents provocative and intelligent works of both established and emerging playwrights in an intimate setting that involves and engages the audience.  New Rep has earned a reputation for dynamic productions that honor the writers and feature talented professional actors from the New England theatre community as well as guest artists from around the U.S.  New Rep has received Elliot Norton and IRNE Awards for outstanding acting, scenic design, direction, and production.  Programming at New Repertory Theatre is supported in part by a grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
