The Harbor Stage Company, the artist-run ensemble that produces intrepid, live performance on the shores of Wellfleet Harbor, will celebrate their fifth anniversary this summer with another season of ambitious, authentic theater.
The 2016 season will open on June 16th with the Harbor's take on August Strindberg's volatile classic Miss Julie. This fiery new version, adapted and directed by Artistic Director Robert Kropf, embraces the play's revolutionary naturalism to highlight its daring exploration of intimacy, status, and desire. Unfolding over the course of a single summer night, Miss Julie charts how the reckless daughter of a wealthy aristocrat and her father's enigmatic hired hand wrestle with sexual chemistry and social class. Performances will play through July 9th.
Next up will be the World Premiere of The Kritik, a spirited new comedy written by Harbor co-founder Brenda Withers. Set in an imagined province of 19th century Russia, the play tells the story of a small-town theater critic struggling to turn in his first honest review. The Kritik will feature co-founder Stacy Fischer at the head of an uncharacteristically large cast of ten and offer a bouyant look at the power of candor, corruption, and community. Opening July 14th, the piece will play through August 6th.
The season will conclude with the New England Regional Premiere of Jez Butterworth's haunting drama The River. The playwright's follow up to his internationally acclaimed epic Jerusalem, the piece turns a simple story-- a man brings a woman to a remote fishing cabin for their first weekend away-- on its head, prompting an eerie meditation on the addictive quality of love. Directed by Harbor co-founder Jonathan Fielding and featuring Kropf, Fischer, and Withers, The River will pay homage to the Cape's visceral and metaphorical connection to fishing. Performances run August 11th through September 3rd.
In keeping with the company's mission to present great plays at affordable prices for the right reason, single tickets to their 2016 season are priced at $23 and will go on sale in April. Three Play Subscriptions are available for $65 and the group will once again host a Pay-What-You-Can night on the First Friday of each production's run. More information on performance dates, donations, and individual ensemble members can be found at harborstage.org.
