Moonbox Productions Announces Its 2018-2019 Season

Moonbox Productions, winner of numerous IRNE and Elliot Norton Awards, is thrilled to announce its theatrical line up for the 2018-2019 season. In November, Moonbox kicks-off its season with LOST AT SEA, a new repertory production of William Shakespeare's Twelfth Night and Donald Margulies' Shipwrecked! An Entertainment. Then in April, Moonbox presents the Tony and Olivier Award winning musical, Caroline, or Change, by Tony Kushner and Jeanine Tesori.

From the shores of Ilyria to the South Pacific, Moonbox Productions takes to the waves this fall with LOST AT SEA. Produced by Sharman Altshuler, directed by IRNE and Norton winning Director, Allison Olivia Choat, with original music composed and arranged by IRNE Award Winner Dan Rodriguez and the repertory company themselves, LOST AT SEA opens on November 24th and runs through December 29th at the Boston Center for the Arts Plaza Theater.

Told by a shared cast of actors and musicians and performed on alternate nights. LOST AT SEA takes the timeless stories of Twelfth Night and Shipwrecked! An Entertainment and explores what it means to be lost, what it means to be found, and what we all discover on our own personal voyages. The cast of LOST AT SEA will invite audiences to join them in an immersive and imaginative new world where actors not only deliver Shakespeare's and Margulies' text, but also perform original live music and puppetry, physical storytelling, and completely live foley effects. LOST AT SEA is suitable for young audiences and anyone with an imagination.

Moonbox Productions' season continues in the spring, April 20th to May 11th, at the Boston Center for the Arts Wimberly Theatre with an all new production of the Tony and Olivier Award winning musical, Caroline, or Change, by Tony Kushner and Jeanine Tesori. Produced by Sharman Altshuler, directed by Allison Olivia Choat and Assistant Directed by Arthur Gomez with Music Direction by Dan Rodriguez, Caroline, or Change promises stunning visuals, unforgettable music and a story to warm your heart.

The place is Lake Charles, Louisiana and the year is 1963. Caroline Thibodeaux, an African-American single mother of four, works as a maid for the wealthy Jewish Gellman family. Her company is the hum of the washer, the croon of the radio, the heat of the dryer, and occasionally, 8-year-old Noah Gellman, a motherless boy who, unable to connect with either his eager-to-please stepmother, Rose, or his distant and grieving father, Stuart, idolizes Caroline. Noah's stepmother Rose decides that when Caroline does the laundry, she can keep any change Noah leaves in his pants pockets. In response, Noah quietly deposits quarters in the bleach cup, hoping to somehow become a part of Caroline's life. Soon Noah and Caroline's friendship is tested to its limits as cultural and social barriers come crashing down between them. Caroline, or Change is a breathtaking musical that combines spirituals, blues, Motown, classical music, and klezmer and folk music. It is a story that touches hearts and open minds.

Throughout the 2018-2019 season Moonbox will continue its support of local non-profits by partnering with a different non-profit organization for each show, giving them greater visibility and helping them to increase the reach and impact of their work.

"We are all gearing up for an exciting ninth season!" says Producer Sharman Altshuler. "We will be presenting our very first repertory production this fall (Lost at Sea) which we have been workshopping with a fabulous team of actor-collaborators. In the spring, the stars have aligned, and we will at last be presenting one of our all-time favorite musicals Caroline or Change in the Wimberly Theater! And we will also be debuting two new Community Initiatives: Our "ShadowBox" program, which we developed last season, gives opportunities to local teens and young adults to experience applied arts and sciences through the world of live theater; and our "Emerging Artist" program provides mentored leadership opportunities in theater production and design to talented individuals entering the theater profession. And as for this winter," adds Altshuler, "keep your eyes open for something special at the BCA Black Box!"
