Merrimack Repertory Theatre (MRT) will be holding an Open House on Saturday, May 16 from 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm at their 50 E. Merrimack St. location in Lowell. The FREE event will provide an opportunity for members of the community to learn about the region's only professional theatre and hear about the upcoming 2015-16 Season from new Artistic Director Sean Daniels.
MRT's Open House will offer something for everyone - long-term subscribers, occasional audience members and those who haven't attended their first MRT production yet. Those new to MRT can learn about the company and how easy it is to attend. All visitors will have the chance to take a backstage tour, meet staff members, and see costumes, props, and designs from past MRT productions.
New Artistic Director Sean Daniels will be on hand to introduce himself to the community and talk about the 2015-16 Season. An accomplished director and creator of new work, Daniels was most recently the Artist-At-Large at the Geva Theatre Center in Rochester, New York. He succeeds Charles Towers, who led the company for 14 years and firmly established the MRT's reputation for producing high quality, compelling new plays, and regional premieres. Daniels was named "One of the top fifteen up & coming artists in the U.S., whose work will be transforming America's stages for decades to come." and "One Of 7 People Reshaping And Revitalizing The American Musical" by American Theatre Magazine.
The lineup of plays in the 2015-16 Season features plays that celebrate hope, humor, and redemption. It includes three world premieres and the launch of the national tour of The Lion, which recently completed a highly-celebrated Off-Broadway run. Daniels will share with Open House visitors more information about each of the plays and why he selected them specifically for his inaugural season with MRT.
The MRT Open House is part of the city's new event celebrating history, art, and community, Spring Fling Lowell. It is also part of Doors Open Lowell, which offers an insider's look into the preservation of many of Lowell's magnificent historic buildings. The free annual event, held this year May 14 - 16 to coincide with National Preservation Month, celebrates Lowell's architectural heritage and urban living and culture.
Merrimack Repertory Theatre (MRT) has been Merrimack Valley's professional theatre company since 1979, and is an integral part of Lowell's identity as the cultural heart of the region. The company is known for its high production standards and for creating compelling new plays and regional premieres that reflect the lives and emotions of its audiences. Sean Daniels has been tapped as the company's fourth Artistic Director and launches his tenure with the 2015-16 Season. MRT is one of the 74 members nationwide of the League of Resident Theatres (LORT.)
