Mazzie, McCarthy, DeRosa To Make Splash in Barrington Stage POOL BOY Reading 1/11

Pool Boy, a splashy new musical in development under the auspices of Barrington Stage Company's Musical Theatre Lab (under the mentorship of Producer William Finn and Artistic Director Julianne Boyd) will be given a staged reading on Monday, January 11 at Ripley-Grier Studios, 520 Eighth Avenue.

A pool boy's summer turns upside down when he's seduced by L.A. glitz and glam and a sexy older woman. Love and chaos ensue in this rocking new musical about a pool boy's hopes and dreams. Based on Nikos Tsakalakos' experience as a pool boy in LA, Pool Boy features music and lyrics by Nikos Tskalakos, with book and lyrics by Janet Allard.

Directed by Kevin Del Aguila (Altar Boyz!; BSC's Funked Up Fairy Tales), with music direction by Michael Pettry, Pool Boy stars Miguel Cervantes (American Idiot, BSC's Spelling Bee) as Nick, Tony nominee Marin Mazzie (Passion, Ragtime, Kiss Me Kate) as Mrs. Duval, Orville Mendoza (Pacific Overtures) as the Sultan, Celina Carvajal (Disney's Tarzan) as April, Stephen DeRosa (Hairspray, Into the Woods) as Mr. Lopes, Jeff McCarthy (Urinetown, Beauty and the Beast) as Mr. Duval, and Joshua Segarra (The New Electric Company) as Jack.

Nikos Tsakalakos (Music and Lyrics) recently appeared in 2009 ANT Fest at Ars Nova with Songs of a Night Owl, a night of his original songs. Niko is one of several composers working with Kevin Del Aguila on the children's musical Duck for President and Other Stories for Theatreworks. He is thrilled to be back at the Musical Theatre Lab developing Pool Boy with Janet Allard. In the summer of ‘07, he inaugurated the late night series at Barrington Stage Company with Late Nite with Niko. Later that year, he debuted the show in New York at the Zipper Theatre. In the summer of ‘08, BSC presented a revue of his work called Songs of a Night Owl. In fall of ‘08, several of the songs were featured in an evening hosted by William Finn at Joe's Pub in New York. He has also performed and contributed to Barrington Stage's annual Songs by Ridiculously Talented Composers and Lyricists You Probably Don't Know but Should, hosted by William Finn. As drummer and lead vocalist, his band Saint Friday has played the Los Angeles circuit, including venues such as the Viper Room, the Roxy and the Troubadour. In Los Angeles, he spent two years at the Academy for New Musical Theatre, where he collaborated with various writers and singers. He is a two-time recipient of the UCLA Writing Lyrics that Succeed and Endure scholarship with Concord Records and Marty Panzer. In May of ‘08, he graduated with an MFA from the Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts. He also worked poolside at the Hotel Bel-Air.

Janet Allard (Book and Lyrics) Plays include: Vrooommm! A NAScomedy (with Michael Bigelow Dixon, Signature Theater commission), Incognito and Fashionistas (Guthrie commissions), Loyal (Guthrie and Children's Theatre Company joint commission), Speed Date, The Unknown: a silent movie musical (awarded Jonathan Larson Fellowship, produced at NYMF by P73 and at Joe's Pub), Untold Crimes of Insomniacs (Guthrie Lab 2004). Producing Theatres: The Public Theater, Mixed Blood, The Kennedy Center, Playwrights Horizons, Yale Rep, The Yale Cabaret. Her work is published by Samuel French, Playscripts, Inc., and Smith and Kraus. Ms. Allard is a Fulbright Fellow, a recipient of two Jerome Fellowships at the Playwrights' Center, has attended the Tisch School of the Arts Graduate Musical Theater Writing Program at NYU. Her songs have appeared in Niko Tsakalakos's many cabarets at Joe's Pub, Ars Nova and the Zipper Theatre. She holds an MFA from the Yale School of Drama, and currently teaches playwriting a University of Miami.

About Barrington Stage Company Musical Theatre Lab
Barrington Stage's Musical Theatre Lab (MTL), overseen by Tony Award-winning composer/lyricist William Finn, was created in 2006 and is a place for young musical theatre writers to develop their work on all levels: from staged readings to workshops to full productions. The critically-acclaimed The Burnt Part Boys (2006), written by Nathan Tysen, Chris Miller, and Marianna Elder, will be produced in May at the Playwrights Horizons (as a co-production with the Vineyard Theatre). Kirsten Childs, who wrote the 2007 world premiere Funked Up Fairy Tales, continued developing her musical at The Sundance Institute and the Manhattan Theatre Club. And Barry Wyner's 2007 hit musical Calvin Berger will soon receive a production at the George Street Playhouse.
