The Cape Playhouse Producer and Chief Executive, Mark Cuddy, today announced four of the six shows for the much anticipated 2015 Summer Season, the historic Playhouse's 89th. In revealing the titles, he stated "We are excited that all six of our shows will be Cape Playhouse premieres! And continuing the tradition we have established over the previous 88 seasons, we will treat our audiences to both classic and contemporary entertainment."
A centerpiece of the 2015 season will be Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe's triumph: My Fair Lady. Tony Nominee Hunter Foster makes his Cape Playhouse directorial debut with the production, the unforgettable story of Eliza Doolittle, the Cockney flower girl who takes speech lessons from Professor Henry Higgins so that she can pass as a proper lady. Set against Edwardian England, My Fair Lady is filled with some of the greatest songs in musical theater history: Wouldn't It Be Loverly?, With a Little Bit of Luck, The Rain in Spain, I Could Have Danced All Night, On the Street Where You Live, Get Me to the Church on Time and I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face.
One of the funniest new musicals of the last decade, The Drowsy Chaperone, featuring music and lyrics by Lisa Lambert & Greg Morrison, and book by Bob Martin & Don McKellar, has been called "the perfect Broadway musical" by New York Magazine. In the story, an eccentric, middle-aged musical theatre devotee who plays the record album of his favorite musical for the audience, with ongoing wry commentary, of a fictional show is called The Drowsy Chaperone, a supposed hit of 1928. The musical comes alive in his apartment, which is transformed into the settings for the singing and dancing characters who appear in a tale of love and stardom.
A special part of the 2015 season will be a new comedy, Women in Jeopardy! Receiving its World Premiere in February at the Geva Theatre Center, the Cape Playhouse production will mark the second presentation of this hilarious contemporary tale. Heard last summer in a play reading at the Playhouse as part of the new "Playhouse Extras" series, Women in Jeopardy! was written by Wendy MacLeod, an award-winning playwright-in-residence at Kenyon College, and directed by Sean Daniels. It's Thelma and Louise meets The First Wives Club when divorcees Mary and Jo are a bit suspicious of their friend Liz's new dentist boyfriend. He may look a bit creepy, but is there really anything to worry about? The fact that his oral hygienist recently disappeared could be just a... coincidence. Imaginations run wild as they try to discover the truth, trading their wine glasses for spy glasses in a hilarious off-road adventure.
Everybody loves a good mystery! The 1992 British mystery-thriller: Murder by Misadventure by Edward Taylor explores what happens when two successful mystery writers, who have worked together for years, start to hate each other. Harry has invested well and now lives with his glamorous wife in a luxury, hi-tech apartment high above the Sussex coast, where the play is set. Paul has spent his earnings on liquor and women, and lives in dread of his gambling debts. Harry wants to break the partnership that is Paul's lifeline, but Paul knows a sinister secret from Harry's past. They find themselves locked in a dance from which murder seems the only escape...and they have just plotted the perfect crime for their latest TV film.
The four announced titles will be joined by two more shows to be announced in February: a recent Broadway comedy hit, and a compelling Broadway drama. The complete schedule of 2015 dates and times will be released at that time.
Each production of the 2015 Season will run for two weeks beginning in mid-June. Season Subscriptions are now on sale and can be purchased at www.CapePlayhouse.com or by calling 877-385-3911.
