The Little Theatre of Fall River will present the one act opera, Amahl and the Night Visitors, this holiday season. The performances will be held at the Firebarn, at the corner of Highland Avenue and Prospect Street, in Fall River. Dates and times are as follows; Thursdays, December 1st and 8th, at 7:30 pm, Fridays and Saturdays, December 2nd, 3rd, 9th, 10th, at 8 pm, Sunday matinee performances at 2 pm on the 4th and 11th.
Amahl was written by Gian Carlo Menotti and was originally performed live on television by the NBC Opera Theatre on December 24th, 1951, becoming the debut performance of the HallMark Hall of Fame. It is the story of a young disabled boy, who tends to tell tall tales, and his impoverished mother who is not always inclined to believe him. One night there is a great light from a bright star, followed by Three Kings who are bringing their riches to the Christ Child. When Amahl tries to defend his mother for the attempted theft of the treasure to help her own son, he has only his crutch to offer the Holy Child. When he does this, the Three Kings, now witness the miracle of the boy’s leg being healed and they complete the journey together.
The Little Theatre production was chosen and directed by Paula Arruda with musical direction by Jane Fiore-Bigelow. When asked about the choice Ms. Arruda states “I felt that hope and faith are missing from our lives right now and it wouldn’t hurt to be reminded of it.” It just so happens that it “hasn’t been performed in the area for over 25 years” and when it was Ms. Arruda played the mother. This production features veteran performers and vocalists; Tracy Gendreau, Paul Allard, John Costa, Ken Ettress and introduces Mary Galstian as Amahl, all supported by a chorus of seasoned vocalists. Please join Little Theatre for this uplifting and poignant classic holiday presentation.
