Synopsis:

A Place near Bethlehem. Amahl and the Night Visitors is the story of a young, crippled boy, Amahl, and the miracle that cures him. Three kings come to visit Amahl and his mother. They have come searching for a king and bring with them treasures of great value. After Amahl's mother is caught trying to steal some of the gold to help her child, the Kings forgive her. She is so overcome with gratitude that she tries to return the gold and Amahl tries to donate his staff - because due to a miracle, he can now walk.
Cast List:
AMAHL, a crippled boy, age 10-14: Boy Soprano Amahl is a mischievous boy who is also very inquisitive. This boy will need to be confident in his acting and singing skills. Will consider a girl if need be. Song: I was a Shepherd
HIS MOTHER: Mezzo Soprano, age 28-45: The mother is a strong yet very broken woman. Is left alone with a child, destitute with no means of any money begging will be next on her agenda. Obvious that vocal quality is needed, but a strong acting piece is involved. Song: All that Gold
KASPAR, a king, Tenor, age 40 and over: Kaspar is one of the Three Kings that is the comic relief of the three. He is slightly deaf, funny, character actor, with tenor vocal skills. Blending voices are a big consideration in the casting of the kings. Song: This is my Box
MELCHIOR, a king, Baritone, age 30 and above: Strong vocal quality, regal, tender and confident. He is the king that is the most serious and the others look to him for his guidance and advice. Again blending of these voices is a must in the casting of the three. Song: All that Gold
BALTHAZAR a king, Bass, age 40 and above: Usually played by an African American but not necessarily. Balthazar is the most exotic out of the three. As with the others, must blend well with the other two. Song: Solo in the Amahl Inquisition
THE PAGE Baritone/Bass: 17-30 He is the squire of sorts to the Kings. He's very suspicious sort and is always in the scene. He does not have as much to sing as the kings, but is present and is part of some of the songs. Song: Solo in Amahl Inquisition-Balthazar
CHORUS OF SHEPHERDS AND VILLAGERS: SATB Because of the size of the Firebarn, we are only looking to cast 4 or 5 woman and 4 or 5 men. They are involved in 2 different songs as the villagers, so it would not involve a lot of rehearsal. They all sing in chorus style. Song: Opening folk song to be taught at auditions
DANCERS: We would like to cast 3 dancers to handle a folk dance of the period. Depending on the sound we get they may come from the Villagers it may be part of the village troupe or separate dancers.
