José Mateo Ballet Theatre continues into the second half of its unforgettable 30th Anniversary with a thrilling audience-favorite Cuban-inspired concert sure to heat up winter! Cuban-born Artistic Director and Choreographer José Mateo goes back to his roots with The Cuba Files (February 12-March 6), a concert of three ballets, including the season's first premiere, set to the music of all Cuban composers. The fourth in a series of popular sold-out Cuban-themed concerts since 2004, The Cuba Files offers a special extended four-week run at The Sanctuary Theatre in Harvard Square, Cambridge .
The Cuba Files (February 12-March 6 /Press Night February 19, 8:00 pm)
Going back to his Cuban roots, Mateo transports us to this mystical culture exploring its past, present and future. The concert featuresEscape (2004) - set to Leo Brouwer's Concerto for Guitar and Violin - about a woman trapped in the repressive environment of her homeland. A composer and guitarist, Brouwer is also well-known for many film scores including A Walk in the Clouds and Like Water for Chocolate. A contrast to Escape, the vibrant Arroz con Mango (2004), explores themes of freedom and joy through the works of various Cuban composers. The Cuba Files will also feature the premiere of a new Mateo ballet.
Enjoy the intimate cabaret-style setting of the historic Sanctuary Theatre, where every seat is thrillingly close to the dancers! Beer and wine are available for purchase during the performances.
