There's always humor in absurdity. The producers of ImprovBoston's newest showcase show bring that absurdity to the end of society as we know it - through the surviving residents of Somewhereville, a fictional, post-apocalyptic, small seaside town. The audience chooses the disaster, and the improvisers pick up and move on - banding together to survive or tearing each other apart - every Friday in March.
"Audiences give the cast a disaster at the start of the show, and the improvisers have to figure out how it affected the world and what the survivors need to do to either get back to normal or create a new world for themselves," explains Producer John Serpico. "We aim to make each show and each world feel unique based on that disaster suggestion. There's something so fun about building a big, weird world and having characters feel real feelings within that world."
March won't be the first time an apocalypse hits the town of Somewhereville. In a previous show, while in development at ImprovBoston, audience members suggested the disaster of hyper-intelligent penguins hunting humans. "One character ended up being a double agent, a human pretending to fight against the penguins but secretly working for them all along," says Director David Thomas.
Serpico and Thomas previously developed the hit show The Oregon Fail: You Have Died of Comedy together. "Both shows are set in a distinct world in which the characters have to live by specific rules. I love seeing what our cast can do when playing in a certain setting and seeing the kind of stories they tell our audiences," adds Thomas.
Somewhereville runs at 40 Prospect Street in Central Square, Cambridge every Friday in March at 10PM. Tickets are available online at https://ibsomewhereville.eventbrite.com.
