ImprovBoston is bringing a new late night cop drama into the fold this winter with the fully improvised Manthorne and The Baron: Cambridge Nights. This comedic exploration of a classic buddy-cop duo and crime drama twists will run Friday nights at 10 p.m. from Nov. 4 -Dec. 9. Tickets cost $16 for adults and $12 for students. ImprovBoston is located at 40 Prospect Street. Tickets are available online at www.improvboston.com/schedule or by phone at 617.576.1253.
In this improvised show, audiences meet Jack "The Man" Manthorne, a wild card who never had partner in all his years as a detective for the Cambridge Police Department. His temper and hair trigger have left more property damaged than recovered and more bodies than files in closed cases. However, a crime so shocking leaves Cambridge reeling and its citizens questioning their identity and Chief of Police Alec "The Baron" Lebarren takes it personally. Motivated by justice and looking for revenge, Lebarren fights fire with fire, forcing Manthorne into a partnership with an ultimatum. As these two veteran crime fighters get closer to the truth, they too begin to unravel. If they are to restore peace in the streets and trust within the community, they will have to face truths they each buried long ago.
Each week, suggestions from the audience help this duo reach the truth. This show stars Alex LeBaron as Chief of Police Alec "The Baron" Lebarren, Brendan Mulhern as Jack "The Man" Manthorrne, and supporting cast Jackie Arko, and Hannah Foell. It is directed by Patrick French.
"Like the trendy Boston crime-dramas -The Town, Gone Baby Gone, and Mystic River - or any entertaining buddy cop movie, the crime in Manthonre and The Baron simply sets things in motion. The intensity of the characters and the interweaving relationships between cops, criminals, old friends, and ex-lovers are what make these shows so dynamic. The emphasis is not on solving the crime. We just want to see these characters interact - and see them fail spectacularly," said director French.
LeBaron and Mulhern created Manthorne and The Baron as a two-person show in the summer of 2010. The show was featured at ImprovBoston's Comedy Lab in January 2011, was accepted to Philly Duofest in June 2011, the Del Close Marathon in NYC in August 2011, and the Boston Improv Festival in September 2011. Now, it expands and moves into ImprovBoston's weekly line-up.
