Handel And Haydn' Society Presents 'Every Voice: A Celebration Of Our Community'

On November 3 and 4, The Handel and Haydn Society will celebrate the dynamic spirit of the local community with a celebration of song. Every Voice: A Celebration of Our Community will bring together members of the H+H Orchestra and Chorus, as well as students from H+H's Vocal Arts Program, for an uplifting musical festival for justice. The performances will be presented in partnership with the Unitarian Universalist Urban Ministry and Inquilinos Boricuas en Acción.

The concerts take place Saturday, November 3 at 3pm at the First Church in Roxbury, 10 Putnam Street, Roxbury, and Sunday, November 4 at 3pm at the Union United Methodist Church, 485 Columbus Avenue, Boston. Directed by Reginald L. Mobley and assisted by conductor Dr. Jennifer Kane, the three-part program will highlight the many voices of the community, including LGBTQIA voices, Latinx voices, and the voices of veterans and those lost to war.

"Continuing in the format that made up our Every Voice program last November, this year's concert honors the community of Boston through a survey of the myriad parts that make up the whole," said Mobley. "Through a program that leans heavily on early music, companioned with some modern compositions, we again propose a unique perspective that disputes a whitewashed and homogenized past and shows that the many voices that make up us today have been a lasting presence."

The program will feature a mix of composers and works, representing a diversity of genres and backgrounds. There will be both early music and contemporary works, and each part will feature both music and guest readings. The program will include works by George Frideric Handel as well as composers Hidegard von Bingen, Chiara Margarita Cozzolani, Michael Bussewitz-Quarm, Francisco Núñez, Paul Crabtree, Z Randall Stroope, John Eccles, Heinrich Schütz, Teresa Carreño, and Esteban Salas.

The program will close with an invitation to everyone in attendance to sing Lift Every Voice and Sing by American composer J. Rosamond Johnson.
