Emmanuel Music, Winsor Music, and Oberlin College and Conservatory announce the 2016 Bach Institute, hosted by Emmanuel Church and supported by generous grants and contributions. From January 8 through 26, 2015, fifteen college and conservatory students selected by audition, from colleges and conservatories through the USA and Canada, will embark on an intensive exploration, mentored by faculty from Emmanuel Music, into the historical framework and performance of Bach arias and cantatas.

The Bach Institute Mission

The Bach Institute has a two-fold mission: to provide an intensive opportunity for college and conservatory students to become immersed in the experience of learning about and performing Bach. The program also offers the participants several community outreach opportunities including performing at local nursing homes and assisted living facilities, and presenting an educational program they design for students at the Mather School in Dorchester. The public is invited to enrich their understanding and appreciation of J.S. Bach at programs including a free master class, talks by John Harbison and Christoph Wolf, round-table discussions on the cantatas being performed on Sundays and a final performance of selected cantata arias and Cantata BWV 37 conducted by Emmanuel Music Artistic Director, Ryan Turner.

The Faculty

The faculty for The Bach Institute is drawn from the Emmanuel Music ensemble, and will include Ryan Turner, Artistic Director; Kendra Colton, soprano, Peggy Pearson, oboe, and Frank Kelley, tenor, Project Directors; John Harbison, Principal Guest Conductor; Pamela Dellal, mezzo-soprano; Michael Sponseller, organ; Heidi Braun-Hill, violin; Rafael Popper-Keizer, cello; Bach scholar Christoph Wolf, guest lecturer.

A participant from 2014 had this to say about the Bach Institute experience: I felt both exhausted and energized at the end of each day. It was such a joy to work so meticulously on details that usually go unnoticed, to be inspired by the experience of musicians who really knew what they're talking about, to focus on chamber skills in a colorful way.

The Students

Faculty members of The Bach Institute audition qualified conservatory and school of music undergraduate students to participate in the program. There will be a quartet of singers (soprano, alto, tenor and bass), two continuo teams (cello and organ), solo flute, violin and oboe. Participating schools include Oberlin College; the others from the Boston area will participate in Cantata BWV 37. This combination of musicians will enable the program to explore a great variety of repertoire.
