Cutler Majestic Theatre brings the combined power of a kickin' rock concert, a classic silent film and the live drama of musical theater to the stage in the East Coast premiere of Vox Lumiere - The Hunchback of Notre Dame running March 25, 27-29, 2009.
This silent film classic comes to life on stage in an explosion of light, color and sound in this unique live performance featuring eight singers/dancers, a four-piece band, new music, multimedia and light show. Joining the cast of Vox Lumiere on the stage will be several of the highly-acclaimed local youth choruses.
The radical new brand of theatrical performance is the brainchild of award-winning stage, film, TV composer and songwriter Kevin Saunders Hayes. According to Hayes, "Vox Lumiere -The Hunchback of Notre Dame is an amazing concert, great theatre, and a wonderful way of introducing our beautiful film heritage to a whole new audience. We're bridging the gap between classic films and the 21st Century as we've created a whole new way for everyone to experience these films through a remarkable theatrical event."
The Hunchback of Notre Dame starring Lon Chaney is one of the first film adaptations of Victor Hugo's novel about hunchback Quasimodo's love for Esmeralda. The sheer spectacle of production and Chaney's poignant, star-making performance are unforgettable. For the filming Chaney wore a hump and harness weighing 60 pounds, twisting his torso to feel the pain of Quasimodo and delivering a performance that earned him worldwide fame.
Performances are Wednesday, March 25 at 7:30pm (press performance), Friday, March 27 and Saturday March 28 at 8pm, and Sunday, March 29 at 3pm (no performance on Thursday, March 26). Post-performance talkbacks will be held on March 27 and 29.
