Students at Concord-Carlisle Regional High School in Boston are proving that, despite their young age, they are keen to embrace diversity and even make high school musical history in the process. With their upcoming production of the gay-themed musical 'Falsettos', Concord-Carlisle will hold the proud distinction of becoming the first public high school in the country to stage the show.

There were initial doubts as to the overall reception of the idea, as Peter Atlas explains to Boston.com. Though when it came time to audition students to fill the roles, the turnout of dozens of students was encouraging. "I can't begin to tell you how proud I am of our administration for supporting this show,' said Atlas, "To say I was surprised would be to underestimate them, but I can tell you I was delighted.'

Performances of 'Falsettos' will be held on Friday at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday at 7:30 p.m.; and next Sunday at 2 p.m. in the high school auditorium, 500 Walden St., Concord. Tickets are $15 and will be available at the door.

'Falsettos' is a musical with a book by James Lapine and William Finn and music and lyrics by Finn, comprising March of the Falsettos and Falsettoland, the last two in a trio of one-act off-Broadway plays (the first was In Trousers) focusing on Marvin, his ex-wife Trina, his son Jason, and his gay lover Whizzer Brown. The show debuted in 1992, and went on to win Tony Awards for Best Book and Best Score.
