La Cage Aux Folles won six Tonys during its original Broadway run in 1984, including the Tony for Best Musical; subsequent revivals have gone on to win five additional Tonys. Maura Hanlon, director of this year's season opener, Failure: A Love Story, directs with musical direction by Cape Rep Resident Musical Director Scott Storr of this season's Evita, and choreography by Todd L. Underwood whose
Cape Rep credits include The Mystery of Edwin Drood and Xanadu. Albin and Georges are life partners who own a popular drag nightclub in St. Tropez where Albin is the star performer. When Georges' son, Jean-Michel, wants to bring his fiancée and her very conservative parents home to meet his father, Georges' efforts to appear "normal" to his future in-laws fail hilariously. But each failure discloses truth and in the end begins to bind all into a family. It is a heart warming, entertaining, signature Jerry Herman score. Cape Rep's 30th Anniversary season is made possible with the generous support of Cape Air, our season sponsor.
This production of La Cage Aux Folles is a true celebration of Cape Rep's 30th Anniversary as Cape Rep company members are joined by newcomers to our stage. Local favorites Richard Sullivan and Jared Hagan play Georges and Albin and Patrick Beasley makes his Cape Rep debut as their son, Jean Michel. Art Devine and Caitlin Mills play the conservative Dindons and Lindsey Erin Agnes is their daughter, Anne, Jean Michel's fiancée. Anthony Teixeira, Jacqueline Coughlin, Ian Ryan, Darlene Van Alstyne and Carey Scott are joined by Erron Crawford, Zilong Zee, and Coy Branscum as the ensemble of characters surrounding the families. Allison Davis stage manages.
Cape Rep's 30th Anniversary season opened with Failure: A Love Story by Philip Dawkins May 7 through June 7, followed by the regional premier of John Patrick Shanley's Outside Mullingar, June 25 through July 25. The Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice musical Evita played from August 4 through August 29. Anne Washburn's Mr. Burns, a post-electric play ran from September 17 through October 18 and the season closes with the Tony-winning musical comedy, La Cage Aux Folles, playing from November 5 through December 6. The Outdoor Theater Children's Show is Mo Willems' Elephant and Piggie's "We are in a Play!" which runs Wednesdays and Thursdays, July 1 through September 3 along with Mary Wilson's popular Pitter Patter Puppets on Tuesdays from July 7 through August 25.
