TheaterWorks has announced the lineup for the company's 2007-2008 season.  The downtown Hartford theater's upcoming series features a roster of contemporary plays that have received the highest honors in the theater world.

TheaterWorks' 22nd season commences in November with John Patrick Shanley's Doubt, the winner of the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award.  The production is followed in January by Douglas Carter Beane's Tony-nominated comedy The Little Dog Laughed. David Harrower's drama Blackbird, the third play of the season, scored an Olivier Award for Best New Play, London's equivalent of the Tony.  David Lindsay-Abaire's breakthrough hit Rabbit Hole was a Pulitzer Prize-winner earlier this year and a Tony nominee.  The series concludes with the New England premiere of Gee's Bend.

The line-up follows:

Doubt by John Patrick Shanley
Directed by Steve Campo
November 9 through December 23, 2007

"Acting on her deep-seated suspicions, Sister Aloysius is determined to challenge Father Flynn, his questionable behavior and seeming authority.  What ensues is a bristling confrontation between the tough-as-nails nun and the priest who feels she has over-stepped her role at their Catholic school.  In an all-new production, Shanley's Pulitzer and Tony Award-winner proves that issues of faith, guilt and innocence are not always black and white," state press notes.

The Little Dog Laughed by Douglas Carter Beane
Directed by Rob Ruggiero
January 25 through March 16, 2008

"This Tony Award-nominated comedy lampooning Hollywood morality had New York audiences in stitches last season!  A barracuda in high heels, uber-agent Diane is out to land her client Mitchell the role of a lifetime by any means necessary.  The only problem is Mitchell can't seem to stay in the closet, which may cost him this make-or-break career move."

Blackbird by David Harrower
Directed by Steve Campo
April 11 through May 25, 2008

"Fifteen years ago, Ray and Una had a relationship.  He was 40; she was 12.  Today, Una appears in Ray's office unannounced to confront him.  Her desire to interrogate him about his current life unleashes a torrent of unresolved emotions.  David Harrower's shocking drama won London's Olivier Award and left audiences breathless."

Rabbit Hole by David Lindsay-Abaire
Directed by Rob Ruggiero
June 20 through August 3, 2008

"Becca and Howard Corbett have everything they could want in life until fate shatters their idyllic home and leaves the couple drifting perilously apart.  Rabbit Hole is a portrait of a family…a bittersweet, rich and funny journey through grief that is ultimately a story of hope, reminding us of the power of the human spirit to heal and get back to the business of living."

Gee's Bend by Elyzabeth Gregory Wilder
Directed by Rob Ruggiero
September 5 through October 19, 2008

"Sadie and her family, descendants of freed slaves living in Gee's Bend, Alabama, sing spirituals and sew scraps of old clothing into stunning quilts.  Stitched into every quilt are the family's triumphs, struggles and pride.  When the modern world sweeps into Gee's Bend, Sadie trusts that her faith will keep her world from tearing at the seams.  If you love The Color Purple and Crowns, you will not want to miss this uplifting testimony to African-American heritage.  Based on a true story -- to learn more visit www.quiltsofgeesbend.com."
