In its two years on the Boston theatre scene, Bridge Repertory Theater has tackled a wide range of material, from its debut with Harold Pinter's The Lover, to its flirtation with musical theatre in LaChiusa's Hello Again, to its embracing of locally grown and new work with Obehi Janice's FUFU & OREOS. At the end of its second season, the innovative young company faces the final frontier: the classics.
Specifically, Bridge Rep will stage Shakespeare's epic political drama, Julius Caesar, all in keeping with the company's intimate, actor-driven aesthetic. The 43-seat venue is Hall A in the Calderwood Pavilion at the Boston Center for the Arts. The cast - all under the age of 35 - is comprised of 7 men (including three Bridge Rep company members) and 5 women (including a female Mark Antony and a pair of singing soothsayers who will serve as the production's framing device).
At the helm is Bridge Rep's Producing Artistic Director, Olivia D'Ambrosio, who will make her directorial debut. "This play has always excited me," she explains. "The language is suspenseful and accessible, and the events range from a delicate scene between a husband and wife to the brutal assassination of the most powerful person on earth. We need not look further than House of Cards to know that these kinds of stories continue to capture the imagination. In this moment specifically, as we in the United States begin to consider our next president, Julius Caesar provides a space where we can think about how we choose and treat our leaders, how we conceive of loyalty and patriotism, and how the actions of the individual impact the wellbeing or destruction of society at large."
Julius Caesar will play May 9 - May 30 in the Stanford Calderwood Pavilion at the Boston Center for the Arts.
