Enjoy the experience of traveling back in time to 1903, Isadora Duncan's "Narcissus" 1906, Ruth St. Denis' "Incense", 1920, Ted Shawn's, "Mazurka and Tango", 1964, Charles Weidman's "Three Brahms Waltzes" and 1981 Anna Sokolow's "The Pond in the Cage". Break into the harsh realities of modern life with Dance Currents interpretations and adaptations of Donald McKayle's "Rainbow Etude" (1996), David Parsons "Parsons Etude" (1999), Carla Maxwell's "Límón Etude" (2001-2) and Robert Battle's "Battle Etude" (2003).
The second half of the evening will be a discussion of experts on how this exciting, disruptive, and ever changing art withstands the test of time. Iris Fanger, dance historian, critic and writer will moderate on Friday night with Peter DiMuro, Marcus Schulkind, Rebecca Rice, Marsha Parilla and Jesse Stinett and as panelists. Merli Guerra of The Arts Fuse will moderate on Saturday night, with Marcus Schulkind, Margot Parsons, Joan Block, Ali Smith, Samantha Govoni and Whitney Cover as panelists. The panelists are choreographers, teachers and dancers in the Boston area.
The dancers performing are Janelle Gilchrist, guest artist for "Rainbow Etude" and Dance Currents dancers Samantha Govoni, Lauren Previte, Avery Saulnier de Reyes, Ali Smith and Meredith Wells. Robin Cho will play the piano live for "Narcissus", "Incense", "Mazurka and Tango" and will be joined by Maire Clement, a vocalist, for "Gretchen am Spinnrade", by Schubert, for "Límón Etude."
