The Berkshire Playwrights Lab, whose innovative new play reading series draws works from the most exciting contemporary playwrights, celebrates its 7th season with a New Play Benefit Gala tonight, June 7 at 8PM at the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center in Great Barrington.
This years' Gala will bring together world-class playwrights, performers, and the Berkshire community for a unique night of theater and a sneak peak into the creative process. The multi-media night will include readings of short plays by Matt Hoverman, Kevin Snipes, Peter Mattei, Richard Dresser, Joe Cacaci, and others, as well as a screening of the Lab's fundraising video which features Lauren Ambrose, Dan Lauria, Wendie Malick, and Treat Williams. Highlighting the evening will be the premiere reading of a new work by the incomparable playwright, screenwriter, and comedienne, Elaine May, whose credits include the screenplays for Heaven Can Wait, The Birdcage, and Primary Colors.
Premium ticket holders are invited to join the performers at a post-performance reception at the Castle Street Café, next to the theater. All proceeds from this event support the Berkshire Playwrights Lab Free Reading Series. Tickets are $27 and $52. Premium tickets including the exclusive post-show reception with the artists are $202.
Founded in 2007 the Berkshire Playwrights Lab is the area's only theater dedicated exclusively to encouraging, developing, and presenting new plays. Through readings, workshops and fully-staged productions, the Lab provides emerging and established writers with a professional and creative environment, while offering audiences the engaging and provocative opportunity to share in the dramatic evolution of premiere works.
About Berkshire Playwrights Lab: The Berkshire Playwrights Lab's mission is to provide the playwright with space to create. BPL provides an opportunity for emerging and established playwrights to find a secure berth where they can develop new work and/or explore new avenues of creativity. Without a commitment to nurturing new voices and new talent, the American theater is losing promising playwrights. The Lab was created to provide playwrights the opportunity to develop their work and more than 25 short and 30 full-length plays have been presented under the BPL banner since its inception in 2007.
