Apollinaire Theatre Company's 11th year of offering free bilingual productions on alternating nights in English and Spanish in Chelsea's Mary O'Malley Park features 2 plays about crossing borders, fear of the Others among us, linguistic slight of hand, and finding one's voice in the chaos.
At once hilarious, disturbing, and poignant, Invasion! centers around a mysterious name: Abulkasem. First encountered in the historical epic "Signora Luna," Abulkasem becomes the perfect all-purpose word, and the name of a gay Lebanese dancer, a radical feminist Muslim theatre director, an asylum seeking apple-picker, a stuttering telemarketer, and the world's most sought after potential terrorist. Swedish playwright Khemiri looks at our fear of The Other from an ever shifting kaleidoscopic array of perspectives.
Invasion! was written for The Stockholm City Theatre and played two seasons of sold out performances. Invasion! has been translated and played in theatres in Norway, France, Germany, Austria, Spain, South Korea, and the UK. In the spring of 2011 it opened in New York, winning Khemiri an Obie Award, and the play returned to New York by popular demand for a second run.
In Apollinaire summer tradition, the audience will move with the action. Audience members are encouraged to bring blankets and beach chairs, and a picnic to enjoy along with the Boston harbor views.
