Apollinaire Theatre Company's 12th year of offering free bilingual productions in English and Spanish has some new twists this year.
We are moving to Chelsea's new PORT Park, which features an amphitheater inside what was a large oil storage tank.
Audience members will also get to explore the park's structures and playgrounds where some of Lorca's more surrealistic scenes will be staged.
For the first time we are also partnering with another theater company.
Escena Latina Teatro will be producing their own unique version of the Spanish original on Friday nights.
In Apollinaire summer tradition, the audience will move with the action. Audience members are encouraged to bring blankets and beach chairs, and a picnic to enjoy along with the harbor views.
The production is staged environmentally in multiple locations in PORT Park, 99 Marginal Street, on the Chelsea Waterfront. In case of rain, call (617) 887-2336 to check status.
Federico García Lorca is considered one of Spain's greatest poets and dramatists. His work inspired a generation of artists in Spain and Latin America with its visionary disregard for theatrical conventions of the time and bold explorations of taboo subjects such as class, sexuality, and the role of women.
Lorca went to Madrid in 1919 where he met and befriended artist Salvador Dali, who designed the scenery for the Barcelona production of Lorca's play Mariana Pineda (1927). Lorca's two most successful poetry collections were Canciones (Songs), published in 1927, and Romancero gitano (the Gypsy Ballads), published in 1928. Romancero gitano was especially daring for the time with its exploration of sexual themes and made Lorca a celebrity in the literary world.
In the 1930s, Lorca spent much of his time working on plays, including a folk drama trilogy Bodas de Sangre (Blood Wedding) in 1933, Yerma in 1934, and La Casa de Bernarda Alba (The House of Bernarda Alba) in 1936. The Spanish Civil War broke out in 1936 and Lorca found himself caught in the middle of the conflict. He was shot by supporters of General Francisco Franco in 1936 in Granada.
