Schimmelpfennig's play about the failure of liberal intellectuals to confront the historic danger of extremism was written in 2015 in a German context, and it's universal relevance has only become more striking in 2017. Winter Solstice is a portrait of liberal impotence in the face of blind conviction. Will these well-meaning dedicated people take action when facism is entertaining them in their living room?

Roland Schimmelpfennig is one of the most produced European playwrights, and his plays have been translated into over 20 languages. In 2010, Schimmelpfennig was awarded the Mühlheimer Dramatists Award for his play The Golden Dragon, which has since received more than 20 productions worldwide. He just finished a commission for the Tokyo National Theater and the Burgtheater in Vienna. Schimmelpfennig is the recipient of the highest Playwriting Award in Germany, the Else-Lasker-Schüler-Prize, to honor his entire Oeuvre.
Apollinaire Theatre Company stages passionate plays at their elegantly restored theater in the Chelsea Theatre Works, as well as free summer theater in the park.
