Boston indie theatre company Also Known As Theatre is proud to announce its second production, In the Forest, She Grew Fangs by Stephen Spotswood, which will run November 16 - December 2 at the Calderwood Pavilion at the Boston Center for the Arts, located at 527 Tremont Street in Boston's South End.
A walk through a mysterious forest late at night. A young woman with a secret past. A social outcast who is simultaneously tormented and ignored. A monster lurking in the shadows. And the most unpredictable spectre of them all, teenage hormones. In the Forest, She Grew Fangs is a bloody fairy tale set in the world of a Gillian Flynn thriller, sprinkled with a dash of Gossip Girl, that delves into the power young women possess--and how they may use it if pushed too far. It is the second production in the company's debut season, which explores the reality that while we are each the hero of our own story, we may very well be the villain of someone else's.
"In The Forest, She Grew Fangs investigates how we are all simultaneously the victims of and complicit in cycles of violence and oppression," says playwright Stephen Spotswood. "While the play revels in elements of folklore and fairytales, the clear lines between hero and monster and victim have been erased."
Also Known As Theatre co-founder Kelly Smith will direct the production: "This play confronts society's focus on simply talking about bullying and school violence, and the dire consequences of inaction. I'm thrilled to bring this darkly humorous, poetic, and queer story to life with an intelligent and talented ensemble of actors and a fiercely creative design team."
Also Known As Theatre is also proud to unite exciting young talent and established Boston fringe artists to collaborate on this female-centered story with a predominantly female production staff.
"Spotlighting the work of female artists is part of our company values," says producer and company co-founder Alexandra Smith. "The American theatre has a long way to go when it comes to gender parity. We're proud to be part of the solution as we work to create opportunities for women both onstage and in historically male-dominated design and production positions."

Also Known As Theatre produces plays that ask, "Who were you before society told you who you were supposed to be?" We present stories that explore the performative nature of person-to-person interactions, and characters who exemplify the tension between social expectations and the essential self: Sometimes courageous, sometimes cowardly, always deeply human. Life--also known as theatre. Also Known As Theatre is committed to partnering with like-minded community organizations to deepen the conversations and discoveries sparked by our work.
