Boston-based indie theatre company Also Known As Theatre is proud to announce its third production, Extremities by William Mastrosimone, which will run March 28-April 13, 2019 in Margaret Jewett Hall at First Church Harvard Square, 11 Garden Street, Cambridge, MA.
Marjorie is home alone on a sunny morning in 1980 when a man enters through her unlocked door, attacks her, and attempts to rape her. She is able to subdue and restrain him, but the threat to Marjorie's life is far from over. When Marjorie's roommates, Terry and Patricia, come home, the three grapple with what to do next and the implications of their limited options. If survivors' accounts of sexual assault are not believed, what lengths must they go to in order to feel safe? What constitutes credibility in the eyes of the public and the law? And what does it mean to be both a victim and a perpetrator of violence? William Mastrosimone's play is just as relevant today as it was nearly 40 years ago and shines a light on the obstacles victims of sexual assault face when they seek justice.
Content advisory: Extremities contains depictions and descriptions of sexually-based violence.
Also Known As Theatre co-founder Alexandra Smith will direct the production: "We committed to producing this play about a year-and-a-half ago when the #MeToo movement was starting to get a national spotlight. The ways in which our cultural conversation around sexual assault has developed since then have lent even more urgency to this work and it was extremely important to us to tell this story with a predominantly female creative team."
"Spotlighting the work of female artists is part of our company values," says producer and company co-founder Kelly Smith. "We're proud that all three productions in our debut season have been recognized by StageSource with its Standing O designation for promoting gender parity in Boston theatre."
Also Known As Theatre is grateful for the multifaceted partnership of the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center (BARCC) on this production, which will provide in-rehearsal consultation, a post-show guest speaker, and takeaway resource materials for audience members.
