This spring, Whistler in the Dark Theatre returns to the intimacy of the Factory Theatre with Wallace Shawn's provocative and controversial examination of a shifting moral compass: 1985's Obie Award-winning Aunt Dan and Lemon.
Step inside Lenora's London flat: she has a tale to tell. It's a tale from her childhood, when she spent her summer evenings listening to her parents' glamorous and cosmopolitan friend Danielle weave stories about her loves and lovers, her escapades and adventures. A quiet and withdrawn child, Lemon escapes into the often seedy world of Aunt Dan's stories: lost in the adventure of it, but often without fully understanding it. Now in her twenties, Lemon mines these remembered stories for lessons - and draws startling conclusions as her memories blossom around her, setting the path for her interrogation of the truth of human compassion.
Director Bridget O'Leary says, "Aunt Dan and Lemon presses the conversations that society says we're not allowed to have. We are left angry, and the next step is to engage in conversation about what we're really angry about." Playwright
Wallace Shawn's bold and uncompromising plays challenge and provoke his audiences, and Whistler in the Dark delivers a controversial evening in the tight confines of the Factory Theatre.
