In the village of Spoon River, Illinois, those inhabitants now "sleeping, sleeping, on the hill" are given one final opportunity to speak to the living by way of their own epitaphs. In more than 60 characterizations and vignettes, along with fetching ballads and historic popular song, it becomes clear that these townspeople - neighbors, friends, lovers, family members, and even murderers - saw each other very differently. Unhindered by the everyday facades of early 20th-century life, their stories are honest, confident, and free of shame. Discover their secrets, heartaches, and regrets; sympathize with their love and loss; laugh with their foibles and foolish adventures; journey through the history their lives created together. Directed by Joseph Wright.
