CYNTHIA-REEVES today announced the ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new public art installation by John Grade. Commissioned by the Sun Valley Center for the Arts for their Craters of the Moon project, John Grade's Spur will be sited in its new permanent location at 4 p.m., Saturday, October 15th, along with Wood River Trail in Ketchum.
Grade's sculpture was initially installed earlier this year at Craters of the Moon National Monument as part of a larger exhibition presented by the Sun Valley Center for the Arts. The sculpture helped celebrate the centennial year of the National Park Service. For the shape of his work, Grade drew inspirations from the wormhole forms marking the lava terrain in this unusual and beautiful national park. Grade's research included a cross-country ski trip in winter - starkly contrasting the white of Idaho snow against the voids in the black lava formations. While the form overall reintegrates what Grade found as naturally occurring forms in the landscape, the horizontal cross ties are intended to reference the region's long history with the railroad.
"We hope everyone will come out to celebrate these tremendous additions to the cultural landscape and all of the partners who have come together to realize this special gift to the community." - Kristin Poole, Artistic Director of the Center.
Grade's noted sculpture, Middle Fork, was on view at the Smithsonian's Renwick Galleries in DC, and will travel to the Seattle Art Museum in January 2017. Other recent projects include Capacitor, which was on view at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center; Elephant Bed, a project installed at the Whatcom Museum and Fabrica, Brighton, UK; and Canopy Tower, a permanent work at the Austin Contemporary in Texas.
John Grade received his BFA from the Pratt Institute, NY in 1992, and has traveled extensively following his graduation, gaining critical exposure to the cultures and environments that have come to shape his artistic vision. Over the decade, Grade has earned numerous grants and awards, including: the 2010 Metcalf Award from the Academy of Arts and Letters (NY); a Tiffany Foundation Award (NY); Andy Warhol Foundation Awards (NY); and, two Pollock Krasner Foundation Grants (NY). He has exhibited extensively in galleries and museums in the US and Europe and his work has been featured in Art in America, Sculpture, The New York Times, The Boston Globe, Conde de Nast Traveler, Italian and Russian Domus and the NPR's "All Things Considered" and "Studio 360".
