The play welcomes you to Almost, Maine, a town that's so far north, it's almost not in the United States-it's almost in Canada. And it almost doesn't exist. Its residents never got around to getting organized. So it's just...Almost. One cold, clear Friday night in the middle of winter, while the northern lights hover in the sky above, Almost's residents find themselves falling in and out of love in the strangest ways. Knees are bruised. Hearts are broken. Love is lost, found and confounded. And life for the people of Almost, Maine, will never be the same. Almost, Maine: It's love. But not quite.
"The nine small stories told in Almost, Maine occur on a cold winter night under the northern lights. In each story, love begins its slow bloom. And each story ends at the moment just before the next moment begins." As theatre artists, we are captivated by these critical moments of transition within the play-the ripe pauses of possibility when we are fully aware that the choice is ours-the moments that set the stage for what will come next." said Core Company Artist, Denise Simone, "So for many reasons, Almost, Maine is the perfect story to close our 20th season. As a Company, we too are at a ripe pause of possibility."
Almost, Maine was developed at the Cape Cod Theatre Project in 2002. The play made its world premiere at Portland Stage Company, where it broke box office records and garnered critical acclaim. Almost, Maine opened Off Broadway in the winter of 2005-2006 at the Daryl Roth Theatre and was subsequently published by Dramatists Play Service. To date, Almost, Maine has been produced by over 2,500 theatre companies in the United States (and by over a dozen companies internationally), making it one of the most frequently produced plays of the past decade.
Core Company Artist Denise Simone directs a standout cast featuring guest actors Sharon Barto (Seattle, WA), Chris Carwithen (Seattle, WA), Matthew Mitchell (NYC) and Russell Simone Wilson (Richmond, VA).
