Company of Fools kicks off the summer season with the sassy Ring Cycle-inspired musical DAS BARBECÜ by Jim Luigs and Scott Warrender running tonight, July 4 - June 28, 2012 at the Liberty Theatre in Hailey.
Opera-lovers and opera-haters alike will be able to kick back and have a good 'ol time with this lightning-paced romp of a play. One critic described DAS BARBECÜ this way: "Conjure up your basic Texas hootenanny, complete with lassos, long-neck beers and guitars. Marry that image with Wagner's Ring Cycle in all its melodramatic intensity. These improbable—no, impossible—bedfellows come deliriously together in a splendidly giddy musical."
DAS BARBECÜ takes Wagner's epic Ring Cycle operas and squeezes them into two acts. The entire show is performed with just five actors playing more than 30 zany characters. Audience members don't have to be familiar with the plot—not that anyone could follow it, anyway—but we’ll try to explain. There's a gold ring (one ring to rule them all). There's a guy, Siegfried. He has the ring. And a girl, Brunnhilde. They’re getting married. The conniving Gibich clan wants the ring. And they can scheme like a politician running for office. It's like "Lord of the Rings" combined with the Real Housewives of Dallas - with a Charlie Daniels soundtrack.
Under R.L. Rowsey’s direction, Company of Fools has assembled a dizzyingly talented cast of actors to tell this crazy tale— Rachel Abrams, Beth Hilles, Duke Lafoon, Mike Tilford and Debra Wagoner. The artistic team for DAS BARBECÜ includes Joe Lavigne (Set Designer), Jay Ryan (Guest Lighting Designer), TEd Macklin (Sound Design) and K.O. Ogilvie (Stage Manager).
This production is supported in part by Carol and Len Harlig and Zions Bank. Company of Fools’ Season Sponsors are High Country Fusion, Main Street Market, Cox Communications, Wood River Insurance, and media sponsor The Weekly Sun.
