This winter, Company of Fools (COF) will present the final mainstage play of its 23rd theatre season with a production of 4000 Miles - a finalist for the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Written by celebrated playwright Amy Herzog and directed by Gary Hopper, 4000 Miles will run Feb. 13-March 2, 2019, at the Liberty Theatre in Hailey.
Praised by the New York Times as "a funny, moving, altogether wonderful drama" that proves "life's small moments can pay off in a big way onstage," 4000 Miles looks at how two outsiders find their way in today's world. After suffering a major loss while on a cross-country bike trip, 21-year-old Leo seeks solace from his feisty 91-year-old grandmother, Vera, in her West Village apartment. Over the course of a single month, these unlikely roommates infuriate, bewilder and ultimately reach each other.
"Amy Herzog's play 4000 Miles by is a quiet drama reminiscent of Anton Chekhov that relies less on plot and more on intimate study of character," said Gary Hopper, who previously directed God of Carnage and Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike for COF. When Leo arrives at Vera's apartment door after a bike trip from Seattle to New York, the two are separated not only by age but also by experience. Over the course of the play, hidden truths are revealed and human compassion and love emerge to sustain them both."
The cast of 4000 Miles features COF company artist Jana Arnold, Jessi Zhang (New York), Adam Turck (Richmond, VA) and Maggie Horan (New York). The crew includes K.O. Ogilvie (stage management); Joe Lavigne (scenic design); Elizabeth Weiss Hopper (costume design); and Chris Henderson (production assistant).
