Boise Contemporary Theater opens its 22nd year, the BCT 17|18 Season, with the number one produced show of this past year, the "profane and profound" puppet comedy Hand to God by Robert Askins.
Askins was a guest at the BCT "An Evening Among Heroes" Season Opening Gala last month, and delivered a sermon-like speech about the cathartic, confirming nature and importance of live theater to "kids like him" in the ever-changing landscape of contemporary America. Askins got his start acting in a small local theater in Texas, and has gone on to be a Tony Award-nominated playwright with the most produced play in America, our season opener, Hand to God.
BCT is pulling out all the stops with the first play of its four-show Mainstage season (five, including the season add-on, Adam Enright's Good Bitch Goes Down). Equal parts profound, profane, irreverent, shocking and hilarious, this puppet comedy was a huge hit on Broadway and went on to be produced by 13 professional theaters across the nation last season. BCT took a bold step to open the 17|18 Season with this kind of bang.
BCT Founding Artistic Director and the show's director, Matthew Cameron Clark, is thrilled at the chance to stage Hand to God on the BCT Mainstage. Said Clark, "No doubt this show is out there, with moments that are truly shocking. But the magic of this play is that it goes so deep into the shadow-side of humanity that you can't help but feel its poignancy while at the same time laughing harder than you've laughed in a long time. It's the best blend of a truly entertaining and transformative experience. I'm so excited and proud to share it with Boise."
The BCT production features local actors Dwayne Blackaller (BCT Artistic Associate and Education Director) and Veronica Von Tobel (BCT's Margin of Error) as Jason/Tyrone and Jessica, respectively-two roles that involve sophisticated puppetry; BCT and Idaho Shakespeare Festival's Greenshow veteran Joe Conley Golden as Pastor Greg; and Philadelphia-based actor, director and artistic director Kittson O'Neill as Margery and Los Angeles-based actor Jonathan Bangs as Timmy-both newcomers to BCT.
BCT is currently selling Season Tickets and single tickets to Hand to God and the 17|18 Season during Box Office hours, Monday - Friday from 10 am to 2 pm, at the theater, by calling (208) 331-9224, or online anytime at BCTheater.org.
